Nylon

NYLON │ MAGNALON®

Nylon │ Magnalon is commonly known as Polyamide.  It is a synthetic polymer and can come in a wide range of different plastic grades including Nylon 6 and Nylon 66 (PA6 and PA66).  Nylon is a thermoplastic and was invented and first produced by DuPont in February 1935 and benefits the plastic manufacturing industry by being used in a wide range of mechanical parts, cables, flooring, and electrical equipment.

Nylon can be typically described according to numbers as you may have noticed was mentioned above.  This relates to the molecular structures.  Although there are many types of Nylon, the two most common types that come in rod and sheet are Nylon 6 and Nylon 66.

Both types of Nylon have very similar properties including the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties.

NYLON 6 (PA6) Extruded

While modifiers can be an additional enhancement to achieve desirable characteristics of Nylon, Nylon is a durable and strong plastic with multipurpose engineered applications.  Nylon is one of the most used Polymers and can be found in applications such as high load bearings, buffers and pads, support wheels and guides and even in the gears to guitar strings. Nylon 6 is a lightweight substitution for aluminium and bronze and nonferrous metals.

Magna Plas Victoria has the capability to offer a heat stabilised and impact modified grade of Nylon 6.  Nylon is well suited to several industries including Food, Health and Medical, Agricultural and Farming, Electrical and Automotive.

PROPERTIES and BENEFITS

  • Nylon 6 has excellent and beneficial bearing and sliding properties
  • Nylon 6 as ideal fatigue and high wear resistance
  • Flexibility
  • Exceptional resistance to creep, wear and a high heat tolerance

NYLON 66 (PA66)

Magna Plas Victoria extrudes Nylon 66 (PA66) onsite in our Victorian manufacturing plant.  The universal Nylon 66 is a semi crystalline thermo plastic is also recognised for its exceptional resistance to high temperatures.  It is important to note Nylon 66 has a better stiffness, tensile modulus and flexural modulus than that of Nylon 6.

PROPERTIES and BENEFITS

  • Ideal sliding properties
  • Abrasion resistant and low friction
  • Nylon 66 is generally resistant to many oils including diesel and petroleum and can create a more rigid texture while resisting abrasion as mentioned
  • Low power factor requirements
  • Good thermal and chemical resistance
  • Outstanding bearing and wear
  • High melting point
  • Nylon often eliminates the need for external lubrication
  • Easy machinability

APPLICATIONS

  • Flex bows (Tarp bows)
  • Wear pads, buffer pads and bearings including high load bearings
  • Nylon bushes and flanges
  • Rollers and wheels including guiding wheels
  • Gears
  • Rope Pulleys
  • Slide plates
  • Automotive components
  • Harvesting components that are useful in the Agricultural Industry such as Grape and Olive Farming
